Are shutters over-rated?

This spring, consider what your home would look like "naked"!

OK, so why do windows even have exterior shutters?  From what I've learned, shutters originated in ancient Greece and were made out of marble.  They were used to control light and air flow.  Over time, the use of shutters spread and different materials were experimented with.  Legend says that Peeping Tom used his leuvered shutters to catch a glimpse of Lady Godiva in all her glory!  Ultimately, glass window panes replaced shutters, but many homes continue to adorn exterior shutters as a traditional decorative feature.  Here's the thing...not every home looks best with shutters, and if they aren't functional, why keep them?

If you have shutters on windows that are spaced closely together, they could be doing more harm than good.  The extra space you create by removing them could make the exterior look cleaner and less crowded.  Even if you have plenty of space between windows, removing the shutters may give your home a more updated look.  As you drive around, take note of what you see.  You'll notice many traditional and historic homes as well as contemporary style homes look great without them.  If you think you just have to have them to create interest or add a pop of color, try adding window boxes or painting your window trim or front door a coordinating color instead!

If you want to see what your home would look like "naked", spring is a great time to experiment.  While they're off, you can clean your windows and spruce up the paint beneath too!
