Home Trends - Give your fireplace some TLC this winter

How important is a working fireplace? That answer has just changed, thanks to the blizzard. Whether selling your home or preparing for the next electrical outage, you may want to give yours some TLC!

”Does the fireplace work?”
Realtors often cringe at this question from potential buyers.  Sadly, many times the answer is, “No, it doesn’t, but it could be fixed” or, “We aren’t sure.  It hasn’t been used in many years.  You could of course have an inspector take a look at it”…Ugh!

Enter Nemo, the storm that proved just how important a working fireplace can be.  At my own home for example, it prompted us to not only have the overdue cleaning, but also to install a properly sized chimney cap to avoid future visits to our venting system by clever squirrels looking to cuddle up by the warmth of a pilot light!  Whatever the issue, the answer is, yes!  Now more than ever, it’s worth it to get your fireplace in good working order, especially if your house is on the market.

This storm will not be soon forgotten, pushing the ranking of a fireplace up a few notches on the “must-have” list for many.  Not only will you be giving your home a +1 in the ”great features/emergency preparedness” column, you will also be taking the responsibility off the buyer to figure out if it’s functioning or not (that’s at least a -1).  It also adds to the overall impression that your home is well maintained and cared for.

Once it’s up and running, light up your fireplace during showings and open houses.  Not only does it look beautiful, it smells great and creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that will help potential buyers remember your property above others.
