There has been a lot of negativity this election season, a lot of attacks (some of them unfair and inaccurate) against me and against my opponent.

It is time for that to stop. It is time for the voters to recognize that, no matter who they support, Mr. Costa and I are running for office because we believe in our democratic process, because we want to serve the voters in District 67, because we both believe we have ideas that can help the residents of our state.

It is a great honor to be elected, to have the opportunity to speak on behalf of the residents of District 67 at the State House, to work to help them and all the residents of Rhode Island as we move past the economic struggles of the past few years and act to restore prosperity to our state.

There are, of course, a number of differences between my opponent and me, not all of them ideological. As a homeowner, a taxpayer, a small business owner, I think I more accurately understand and represent the concerns and desires of the residents of Barrington and Warren. Having served in the House of Representatives since 1996, I think I have gained the experience necessary to work cooperatively with other lawmakers to move our state forward.

There have been major accomplishments during my years in office. We brought reform to the pension system, established a sensible education aid formula, enacted laws to make it easier to do business in Rhode Island, enacted laws to make government more accessible and transparent.

There is more work to be done. I want to thank all who have supported me in the past and ask the voters of District 67 to allow me to represent them for the next two years.

Finally and most importantly, no matter who you decide to support, please make sure you vote on Tuesday, November 6.

 Sincerely Jan Malik.
