Fraudulent Check Scheme Hits Bank

Barrington police are aiding an investigation of fake checks being cashed at BankNewport branches last Friday.

Barrington detectives are involved in an investigation into fraudulent checks cashed at a half-dozen BankNewport branches last Friday, June 8.

A man using the name "Drew Brooks" reportedly cashed thousands of dollars worth of fake checks from Tiverton Auto Gallery, said Barrington Det. Lt. Drew DeCrescenzo.

The check he cashed at the Barrington branch on County Road was made out for $1,563.41, DeCrescenzo said. The bank reported the fraudulent check to police at 5:07 pm.

The man used a fake passport to verify his identity and claim the cash, DeCrescenzo said.
