Girls' Track Team Captures Pair of Victories

Barrington High School's indoor squad used several young and inexperienced runners to win Tuesday night.

Barrington High School's girls' indoor track team began their new campaign by capturing a pair of victories against Coventry, 75-30, and Chariho, 83-23, on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the Providence Athletic Facility.

Freshman Mary Coogan and sophomore Fiona Paine were among the underclassmen to impress head coach Steven Turgeon during Tuesday's meet, which coincided with a choral performance at the high school. Without several athletes who sing in the chorus, Turgeon was forced to activate a few younger Eagles.

"Just relax and do what you're capable of doing," he told them before the meet. "That's all we can ever ask, and if you do what you're capable of doing, we're pretty sure that we'll be pretty competitive."

The Eagles won championships in 2009 and 2010 with contributions from junior Danielle Butts and senior Molly Malinowski. Tuesday, Butts and Malinowski established new standards for themselves and their teammates.

"It usually takes a little while before you start seeing PR's (personal records) out of kids. They usually come at the end of the season," Turgeon said. "We're already getting them now."

The Eagles will return to Providence Jan. 4 when they are scheduled to compete with the Classical High School and La Salle Academy.

"We're still learning, because we do have a lot of young kids," Turgeon said. "We're still learning what people can do and what they're capable of."
