Ingrid Bergman: A Celebration, librarian Doug Swiszcz's film lecture series, concludes on Wednesday, April 2nd at 1:00 PM at the Barrington Public Library. Mr. Swiszcz will offer commentary before the screening. The program is free and open to all.
The final film is The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958). Based on a novel (that was in turn based on a true story), the movie showcases Bergman's penchant for playing characters who possess both vulnerability and strength. She portrays Gladys Aylward, an English woman of the 1930's who wants to be a missionary in northern China. Once there, Gladys faces many obstacles: learning a foreign language, overcoming the Chinese people's fear of outsiders, and guiding one hundred children to safety when the region is invaded by the Japanese. Curt Jurgens and Robert Donat are also in the cast. (1958 - Color - 2 hours, 40 min.)
