Ingrid Bergman: A Celebration, librarian Doug Swiszcz's film lecture series, continues on Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 PM at the Barrington Public Library. Mr. Swiszcz offers commentary before each week's screening. The series is free and open to all.
On March 12th, Gaslight (1944) is the featured film. Bergman won an Academy Award as Best Actress for her role as Paula Alquist, a newly married heiress who moves with her husband (Charles Boyer) back into the London house in which she was raised by her aunt, until the old woman's murder sent her away. Soon, strange things begin happening to Paula, leading her to fear that she is losing a grip on her sanity. Joseph Cotton plays a detective who takes an interest in the aunt's still unsolved murder and tries to keep Paula from slipping completely into madness. Also in the cast are Dame May Whitty as a nosy neighbor, and 18-year-old Angela Lansbury, making her film debut as a saucy Cockney servant. (Black and white; 114 min.)
Here's the rest of the lineup:
