Name the Park at Police Cove

Barrington's Police Cove Committee is asking for help from the public to name the park to be constructed this summer at the cove. It released the following information:

The committee has been busy working on details to the park and are looking for naming ideas.      

What: Construction to the newly designed park at Police Cove will soon be underway and the town needs your help in naming the park.  

When: Submissions are due by May 15, 2013 by emailing them to phervey@barrington.ri.gov, or dropping them off at Barrington Town Hall-attention Phil Hervey, Town Planner.    

History of site: The town-owned waterfront property just west of the Barrington Bridge was the former location of the Barrington Police Department. The police department had moved into the location in 1934 when a full-time police force was initiated in town. The building, a former trolley car electric station, was demolished in 2001 after voter approval deemed the building too costly to renovate. The police moved to their current location on Federal Road in 1999. The site has remained undeveloped and was used as a staging area for the RIDOT (Rhode Island Department of Transportation) while the Barrington Bridge was under construction. With the completion of the bridge last year, the Police Cove Park Committee began working on plans for the site and have finalized a plan that will offer an inviting public space that will draw visitors from the East Bay Bike Path, the Barrington River, and its location on County Road/Rt. 114.      

Future of site: The one-acre parcel will be totally renovated and have parking for vehicles, bicycles, and boats; green space, electrical hook ups for food vendors and signage. A new boat ramp and transient boat dock are planned for construction this summer, with limited boat trailer parking available as well. LED lighting and plantings will complete the park and make it an inviting gateway to the community from points south.  The park will offer the opportunity to be the home to festivals, art shows, community events and more in addition to other passive and active uses.
