UPDATE: Volunteer to Move Debris

John DeAngelis of DeAngelis Excavating reacts to a Patch story and volunteers to haul away the debris dumped at the Sowams Woods conservation site in Barrington.

A story on the illegal dumping of construction debris at the Sowams Woods conservation site on South Lake Drive was posted by Patch early last evening, Feb. 23. By early this morning, Feb. 24, a volunteer had stepped forth to remove the debris.

Helen Tjader, of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust, which owns the site, said: “We have a local volunteer with the large machinery to remove the pile at Sowams Woods.”

“John DeAngelis of DeAngelis Excavating Inc will be able to remove the pile early next week when he will have the large machinery in town,” she said.

DeAngelis’s wife saw the original story posted by Patch and brought it to his attention, Tjader said.

“He felt that it could only have been done by an out-of-town contractor,” she said.

Indeed, a check with the Coastal Resources Management Council indicates that “there isn't anyone with a permit for coastal work in our area or the Nayatt area right now,” she said.

Some of the debris seems to have come from a coastal area, Tjader said.

“So no new clues there,” she said. “Probably an illegal, un-permitted activity so another reason to just  dump it.”
