New England Stone Wall Workshop at Blithewold

Learn all about New England's iconic stone walls-including how to build them-at this fun and informative workshop with Neil Best.

What is better than a walk in our New England woods in the fall, immersing yourself in one of nature’s perfect landscapes, one punctuated by historic stone walls? There’s just something magical about the way these man-made elements weave their way around trees, up rocky hills, and down into wetland grottos. And if you are like most New Englanders (or even transplants from elsewhere), you’ve probably yearned to have those stone fences somewhere in your own landscape. Now is your chance to admire them up close and personal. Join Neil Best, co-owner of Magma Design Group and a stonemason and landscape architect, for a one day workshop geared toward all things stone related. Besides sharing the history of the stone found in the region, Neil will show you how to use the tools that shape and cut stone. Even get to learn by doing, splitting and shaping granite with your own hands. He will also teach the techniques of proper wall building. Best of all, you’ll work with Neil to rebuild a portion of a stone wall somewhere on Blithewold’s grounds. So bring your work boots and your fortitude, and get ready to have an adventure in stone!

Participants will meet in Blithewold’s Carriage House. Refreshments will be served.
