Coast Guard Rescues 4 From Sailboat Sinking Off Block Island

The four mariners were treated for signs of shock and hypothermia, according to the Coast Guard.

BLOCK ISLAND, RI — The Coast Guard rescued four mariners from a sailboat sinking off Block Island.

The 60-foot sailing vessel Scotch Mist contacted the Coast Guard and reported they were taking on water through a deteriorating shaft seal while transiting offshore waters about 170 miles south of Block Island Tuesday morning, the Coast Guard said in a media release.

"Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod launched a HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew to deliver a dewatering pump and provide communications support," the release said.

The Coast Guard Cutter William Chadwick was sent to assist the vessel the crew brought all four from the Scotch Mist aboard and treated them for signs of shock and hypothermia, according to the release.

"This case highlights the excellent coordination that occurs between the Coast Guard Command Centers, Air Stations and Surface Assets," Lt. Cmdr. Brent Lane, commanding officer of the William Chadwick, said in the release.

"Our separate crews did an amazing job of working as a unified team to deliver the best outcome possible,” Lane said. “I could not be prouder of the crew of William Chadwick for their dedication and professionalism which ultimately resulted in four lives saved."
