The body of John Benevides, 46, of Coventry, was found today, police said.

COVENTRY, RI — The search for John Benevides, 46, came to a sad conclusion on Tuesday. Coventry police said at 2:31 p.m. they received a report about a body in the Pawtuxet River behind Rhodes Technologies on Washington Street. Benevides was last seen on June 16 walking along the side of the Shell on Washington Street. His family organized a search for him. Tuesday morning, the volunteers and kayakers were to meet in the parking lot of the Family Dollar and try to retrace his steps.

This afternoon, firefighters and rescue workers from the Anthony, Central Coventry, and Hopkins Hill Fire Departments removed the body from the water. Detectives from the Coventry Police Department were able to positively identify the body. Police said there was no sign of foul play, and the RI Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene and took custody of the body. A cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.
