143 New Cases Of Coronavirus In Rhode Island; 21 Deaths

PROVIDENCE, RI — The Rhode Island Department of Health reported 143 new cases of the coronavirus Wednesday and 21 deaths, bringing the state's totals to 14,353 cases and 655 deaths.

As of Wednesday, 218 people are hospitalized in Rhode Island. Of these, 49 are in intensive care units and 35 are on ventilators. Hospitalizations have held steady over the past month, slowly trending downward since a peak of 375 at the end of April.

The number of cases has trended downward as well, with some day-to-day peaks and drops. Wednesday's numbers appear to be a large increase from the days before, but this is most likely due to a large drop in the number of tests over Memorial Day weekend, Gov. Gina Raimondo said Tuesday. Approximately 1,000 more tests were conducted Tuesday, compared to the day before.

Of the 21 deaths reported Wednesday, 16 were in assisted living facilities. One of the victims was in their 50s, one in their 60s, three in their 70s, nine in their 80s and seven in their 90s.

Rhode Island's urban core continues to have the largest percent of positive cases compared to the population. Central Falls still has the highest rate in the state at 4,097 cases per 100,000 people. Providence, meanwhile, has the second-highest rate at 2,648 cases per 100,000 people.

Aside from Block Island, which has a rate of 0 cases per 100,000 people, Hopkinton has the lowest rate of cases in the state, with 160 cases per 100,000 people.
