New Data Shows Coronavirus Inequalities In Rhode Island

So far, 45 percent of the state's coronavirus cases have been in the Latino community, according to the department of health.

Another 339 people contracted the new coronavirus in Rhode Island Monday and five more died, according to the latest data from the Rhode Island Department of Health. This brings the state's cumulative totals to 5,090 cases and 155 fatalities.

Providence still has, by far, the highest concentration of cases compared to any other community in the state with 1,399. Block Island, meanwhile, has the least with zero.

According to Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, the director of the department, all five of Monday's reported deaths were nursing home residents: one person in their 60s, one in their 80s and three in their 90s. To date, most of the state's deaths have been been associated with nursing homes.

Newly released demographic information shows that approximately 45 percent of the reported cases so far have been Latino, a group that makes up about 15 percent of the state's total population. African-Americans, meanwhile, have accounted for about 12 percent of cases, despite making up around six percent of the population. The department is working to address these disparities, Alexander-Scott said, through efforts including targeted messaging strategies for at-risk populations, utilizing health equity zones and more.

Rhode Island's cases of coronavirus are broken down by age, race and sex in the figure below, followed by the latest-town-by-town numbers.
