Amid Bus Driver Shortages, Cranston Schools Ask For More Dropoffs

Parents and guardians who are able to are asked to drive their students to and from school to reduce demand for busing.

CRANSTON, RI — Cranston students will head back into the classrooms Tuesday, as administrators scramble to get enough bus drivers to meet the district's needs. Amid staffing shortages, the school district called on parents and guardians to help address the transportation issues.

"As the school year begins, we are currently experiencing a shortage of school bus drivers," district administrators wrote in a message to parents and guardians. "While there are no longer capacity limitations based on COVID protocols, staffing shortage is causing this problem."

This issue is not unique to Cranston, rather "a nationwide problem being experienced across the transportation industry," the letter continued.

The shortage is expected to affect elementary schoolers the most, the letter said. Some students may arrive home later than usual due to drivers having to double up on bus routes, extending travel times.

"We recommend that anyone who is able to transport their child to and from school, to please do so," the letter continued. "We realize that this is an inconvenience for many families, and we do apologize and appreciate your cooperation."
