In Cranston, plow crews struggled all day to keep up with the storm that brought conditions remarkably similar to last weeks blizzard for several hours.

As a result, roads were slick and snow covered and sidewalks were treacherous after nightfall Monday, prompting school officials to make the call to cancel school Tuesday.

In addition to the potentially dangerous conditions on the ground Tuesday morning, students would have been greeted with temperatures in the single digits with wind chills making it feel as cold as 11 degrees below zero.

Meanwhile a parking ban that was initiated early Monday remains in effect until further notice, according to the Cranston Police Department.

With Tuesday’s school closure, Cranston students will have missed five days of classes since last Monday.

Unsafe routes to school and more than 20 inches of snow coupled to make the cleanup job at the city’s schools a major challenge after last week’s blizzard, causing the schools to close from Tuesday until Friday.

Cranston students enjoying the days off might be getting reminders from parents that the days will have to be made up at the end of the year, pushing the school calender far beyond the official June 10 end of the school year.

In recent years, parents have begun to wonder -- is it time to consider ditching February of April vacations?
