BJ's, Stop & Shop Raise Wages For Workers: Coronavirus In RI
BJ's will offer employees a $2-per-hour raise, while Stop & Shop union employees will receive a 10 percent raise.

Two "essential" Rhode Island retailers are increasing pay and benefits for their employees during the coronavirus pandemic. Both BJ's Wholesale Club ans Stop and Shop will be raising hourly rates and changing their policies to better serve their employees.
BJ's will increase hourly rates by $2 per hour, both in Rhode Island and across the country, the company said in a release. The raise went into effect on Monday and will continue until at least April 12. In addition, managers and "key personnel" will receive a one-time bonus of $500 to $1,000 at the end of the month.
The company has also expanded its charitable offerings, the release said, making a relief fund available to employees in need and donating $400,000 to community organizations, as well as $100,000 to Feeding America.

Stop ans Shop, meanwhile, said it will offer a 10 percent raise to all union employees, as well as two weeks of paid sick time for those who are required to self-quarantine and flexible hours to help employees dealing with school and child care closures.
"Spending necessary time away from work because of COVID-19 will not put their jobs at risk," the company said in a statement. "In these times, and always, we are thankful to our associates for all they do in service to our communities."
