Budlong Pool Officially Opens

Cranston is one of the few communities in America that still has a large community pool.

Budlong Pool, a wellspring of relief and fun for Cranston families if officially open.

City officials marked the opening of the pool on Monday.

The pool, located at 198 Aqueduct Road, is one of the largest outdoor pools in the country and one of the few remaining large community pools that once were a hallmark of American suburban communities.

Holding more than a million gallons of water, the pool is open during July an August, opening at noon and will be open daily from noon to 6 p.m. Seasonal passes will be available for Cranston residents only and can be bought during regular pool hours.

Swim lessons are also available early in the morning. For specific information on pool opening, rates, and swim lessons please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 780-6169. During the months of July and August when the pool is open, you can call the pool directly at 383-3105.

Nonresidents can buy a day pass for $10.

The bright blue oasis had an uncertain fate a few years ago and was closed during a bad budget crunch in 2010. It sat unused all summer following, collecting leaves and rainwater that slowly turned from green to brown and serving as a bleak reminder of how drained the city’s coffers had become.

Cranston Mayor Allan W. Fung made reopening the pool a priority in the subsequent budget year. It has since received a bit of upkeep and is a symbol of summer in Cranston.
