Chapel Grille Stops Honoring Faiail's Gift Certs after Numerous Fakes

A few bad apples took advantage of a Cranston restaurant's gesture of good will.

Chapel Grille has ended its program of redeeming gift certificates from the now-closed Faiail’s Restaurant after a rash of phony certificates began appearing.

The end of the program is effective immediatley.

In a statement, a Chapel Grille spokeswoman said that the restaurant had redeemed more than $49,000 in gift certificates and β€œwanted to do its part in reaching out to all Rhode Islanders” that fell victim to the situation with Faiail’s, which closed abruptly and generated more than 750 complaints with the Attorney General’s Office.

The program began about two weeks ago and after a while, the staff β€œbegun noticing a pattern in recent days of suspicious attempts to exchange what looked to be fresh prints of certificates or blatant forgeries of certificates,” a statement read.

For the restaurant, which hoped to spread good will and maybe earn a few new customers along the way, the fraud problems required too much time and energy to screen each certificate.

β€œThings became problematic for Chapel Grille’s staff and the restaurant did not want it to take away from providing guests with the best food, service, value and atmosphere in the state,” the statement read.

Customers who already had gift certificates converted into Chapel Grille gift cards need not worry. They’ll still be redeemed.
