Coronavirus In RI: 321 New Cases, 12 More Deaths

The total number of coronavirus cases in Rhode Island has now passed 8,000.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The total number of cases of the new coronavirus in Rhode Island passed 8,000 Wednesday with the announcement of 321 new cases and 12 additional deaths. To date, there have been 8,247 cases in total and 251 deaths, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health.

Wednesday's data shows a spike in cases compared to the last few days, with more than 100 more cases reported compared to Tuesday. At this time, 269 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, while 80 are in intensive care units and 55 are on ventilators.

On Monday, Gov. Gina Raimondo outlined the state's phased plan for reopening the economy, hopefully after the current stay-at-home order expires May 8. For that process to begin, the state must see 14 days of declines or steadiness in cases numbers, she said, as well as no large spikes in hospitalizations.
