Drunk Woman Crashes, Keeps Driving with Kids in Car: Police

Cranston police said they followed a trail of oil in the roadway and found an intoxicated woman, a smashed up car and two kids in the back.

Cranston police arrested a 28-year-old Johnston woman for allegedly driving drunk with two children in her car after she crashed into a telephone pole and, while leaking oil all over the roadway, kept on driving with two flat tires on Saturday night.

Janira Flores, 28, of 28 Osgood Ave., Johnston, allegedly struck the telephone pole at the intersection of Park and Mayflower Avenues at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night, said Cranston Police Chief Col. Michael J. Winquist.

A passing motorist saw the crash and called police, noting it was leaking a large amount of oil.

Officers noted that Flores showed ”obvious signs of intoxication,” Winquist said, and her two daughters, 8 and 10, were in the back.

Flores failed a field sobriety test and was arrested. The children were turned over to a family member who responded ot the scene.

Nobody was hurt in the crash.

Flores is being charged with driving under the influence while transporting a child under the age of 13. She was also cited for refusing a chemical test and leaving the scene of an accident causing damage to a highway fixture.

She was arraigned before a Justice of the Peace and released on personal recognizance. She will return to court at a later date.

Winquist noted that Cranston police have charged 52 people with driving under the influence so far this year.

“Fortunately no persons were injured. . ., especially the two young children who were passengers,” Winquist said. “The Cranston Police Department is fully committed to detecting and removing impaired drivers from our roadways. There is simply no excuse for driving drunk or under the influence of drugs.”
