Edgewood Eagles Cheerleaders Continue Winning Ways at Nationals in Disney

The squads are competing against the best in the country. So far: two national championships, a runner up finish a fourth-place finish.

After making history with a clean sweep at regionals last month, the five Edgewood Eagles cheerleading squads have continued their winning ways at nationals in Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

On Monday, the Junior Pee Wee squad took home fourth place, an impressive feat, considering the skill and talent it took to get to nationals in the first place.

On Tuesday, the Pee Wee squad finished as second place national champs.

On Wednesday, the Junior Midget squad took to the mat and nailed it. And it was no surprise when they were crowned national champs.

On Thursday, the Midget 2 team followed suit with another knockout performance and sure enough, another national championship.

On Friday, the Midget 3 team is set to perform and for parents and coaches, whatever the result, this year has been another banner year for the Edgewood Eagles organization as these cheerleaders showed grit, drive and incredible results.

Cheer coordinator Lori Schichilone Sweeney has been posting updates all week on Facebook. Along the way, she’s expressed pride: “so proud!” to the nervousness one would expect her to feel with the pressure on and her hard-working girls on center stage.

“gonna throw up. . . .” she said on Friday five minutes before the Midget 3 team’s routine was set to begin.

Last month, Sweeney said the organization has managed to build a certifiable dynasty with the Edgewood Eagles, improving every year for several years leading up to their high-performing level right now.

“Our program has grown each year, obtaining our highest numbers yet and one of the biggest in New England at 210 cheerleaders,” she said at the time. “That says a lot for the non-profit organization and coaching staff. These coaches volunteer their time to develop skills within these children. But not only cheer skills, they also instill life-long lessons, such as teamwork, dedication, integrity and sportsmanship.”

And another squad that won’t be competing for championships but deserves recognition is the Mitey Mite cheerleaders, who range between 7- and 8-years-old. They were picked to participate in an exhibition for non-competitive cheerleaders at Disney World, too.

“They dazzled the audience with their big spirit and impressive stunting skills!” Sweeney said.

We’ll have more details once the competition is over.
