International Used Appliances opened its doors at 431 Pontiac Ave. recently. The store sells used appliances and makes repairs, both stamped with a three-month guarantee.

In the market for a refrigerator, stove, dishwasher or washer? Don't want to spend a fortune? You might want to check out International Used Appliances at 531 Pontiac Ave.

The new store is a family business run by Nelson L. and Gisselle Amparo, along with Nelson's brother, Nelson A.

There are actually nine Nelsons in the family, which hails from the Dominican Republic.

"Where we come from we go by our middle name," said Nelson A. with a smile. "Well, in America, it has caused some trouble."

Cranston Mayor Allan W. Fung and Lawrence DiBoni, the city's director of business development, were on hand for a ribbon cutting at the shop on Monday.

The store is brimming with appliances of every color, size and degree of wear. You can walk out with a barebones-priced washer or dryer or fridge. Or you can pay half (or less) for a large stainless steel fridge that could cost you $1,000 new and runs as good as new.

International Used Appliances is also an appliance repair shop, so consider getting something fixed instead of throwing it out. In the end, you'll "save your planet and your wallet," according to the store's slogan.

Every product comes with a three month guarantee.

Nelson A. said he learned how to fix appliances by watching his father, who owned an appliance business back home in the 1990s.

"Every day after school I'd head over there and watch and learn," he said.
