Police ID Man Hit, Killed On I-95 N In Providence

Rhode Island State Police said Alfonso Rodriguez, 53​, was hit on Interstate 95 in Providence, likely by several vehicles.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island State Police have released the identity of the man who was hit and killed on Interstate 95 North early Thursday morning as Alfonso Rodriguez, 53, who was last known to be living in Providence.

The crash happened around 4:40 a.m. near Exit 23 in downtown Providence, according to state police. Rodriguez was walking on the highway and was likely hit by several oncoming vehicles, police said.

Investigators also were working to determine why he was on the highway at the time. No one else was hurt in the crash.

The crash forced first responders to close several lanes of traffic on the highway for hours, slowing traffic during the already busy morning commute. All lanes were reopened by 7 a.m., though delays continued. One commuter reported slowdowns starting all the way back at Exit 13 (Route 37) in Cranston just after 7:30 a.m.
