In the wake of a controversial tweet from the Diocese of Providence's bishop, Governor Gina Raimondo officially declared June Pride Month in Rhode Island on Monday. The month-long celebration is a show of support for the state's LGBTQIA+ community.

"The Rhode Island LGBTQIA+ community has made countless contributions to our state that we celebrate not only during Pride Month but every day of the year. I stand with the community and support them," Gov. Raimondo said. "This month serves as a reminder that we must always remain dedicated to the cause of equality. The values of tolerance and freedom that our state was founded upon remain as important as ever, and I am committed to ensuring Rhode Island remains a place where people from all walks of life are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve."

On Saturday, Bishop Thomas Tobin tweeted that Rhode Island Catholics should not take part in or support Pride Month events, sparking backlash and a demonstration by Rhode Island Pride in Providence's Cathedral Square. In response, a Rhode Island priest sent a message to LGBTQIA Catholics in the state, asking them to remain a part of the church.
