"Hairspray" Opens at Cranston High West

A cast of 40 students puts on the musical, which won eight Tony awards.

CRANSTON, RI "Hairspray," the musical, opens Friday, Dec. 9 at the Cranston High School West Theater, Cranston High School West Auditorium, 80 Metropolitan Ave., Cranston.

Curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. and the show continues on Saturday night, also at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $12.

According to the production notes, "it's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire -- to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network. All the while, she can't get her hairdo mussed."

The cast includes 40 students and more than 50 students worked behind the scenes.

Reserved tickets can be picked up Dec. 8 from 5 p.m. to 8 in the auditorium or at the door prior to the performance. Doors open one hour before the show.
