CRANSTON, RI — A new, inclusive workout area has opened at the Park Avenue YMCA in Cranston. The state's first, the facility allows those with disabilities to work out in an environment suited to their needs.

The workout area is part of the gym's main exercise area, and specially trained staff are on hand to help members use the equipment safely and correctly.

The gym was built as part of a partnership between the Gary Balletto Foundation and the YMCA, inspired by the foundation's namesake, a boxer paralyzed from the chest down.

In 2013, Balletto, known as Tiger, was training for American Ninja Warrior in his backyard after retiring from a decade-long boxing career. Over the next 18 months, he slowly recovered, realizing that there are few gyms in the state equipped to meet his needs and those of the greater disabled community.

"Gary has been a true inspiration for a long time to not only the people of Cranston, but the entire state as a whole," said Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello, who joined other state officials to cut the ribbon on the new facility. "His determination and always positive spirit demonstrates what is possible in the face of adversity and I could not be any prouder to call him a friend. I have no doubt that this gym will serve its use well and that Gary will continue to be an inspiration for many more future years to come."
