E. coli bacteria infections can cause severe stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea, which can sometimes be bloody. Most people become ill three to four days after ingesting tainted food and recover within a week, though serious complications can occur. Young people, the elderly, anyone with a weakened immune system and pregnant women are the most susceptible to food-borne illnesses.

The Centers For Disease Control recommends never eating products containing raw flour, including cookie dough and cake batter, as uncooked flour can contain bacteria.
