Bridge Repairs To Close Lanes Near Providence Place Mall

Lane closures are going into place on Promenade Street near the Providence Place Mall starting next week.

PROVIDENCE, RI โ€“ More construction is planned for downtown Providence, starting next week. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said Tuesday that lane closures are planned for Promenade Street, behind the Providence Place Mall for bridge repairs. The traffic changes will be in place until later this summer.

Starting April 1, the left lane of Promenade Street and Providence Place will be closed at Park Street along the Woonasquatucket River. Providence Place runs on the east side, heading towards the mall and Promenade Street heads west on the other side of the river, away from the mall. Two lanes will remain open on the Providence Place side, while just one lane will be open on the Promenade Street side.

Access to both mall parking garages will not be impacted during construction.

RIDOT says the closures are needed as crews repair two concrete piers that support the ramp that carries traffic from Route 6 East and Memorial Boulevard to I-95 North. All construction is planned for below the bridge deck, so it will not affect traffic on the ramp. The $3.2 million project will also include repairs to four other support piers in the Exit 22 area, but the Providence Place Mall area is the only place where lane closures are required.

Meanwhile, RIDOT is planning on closing Exit 22 B and C off I-95 North on Sunday through Thursday nights, starting in mid-April. The closures are scheduled to last for about ten weeks as crews make repairs to the exit.
