National Grid Suspends Electric, Gas Shutoffs During Coronavirus
The policy is aimed at easing the financial burden on customers during the pandemic, the company said.
National Grid has stopped all collections-related activities for the near future, including shutoffs. The measure is aimed to ease financial burdens during the coronavirus epidemic, the company said Friday. The policy is part of the company's "pandemic preparedness plan," focused on ensuring all customers have access to electricity and natural gas.
"We recognize that this pandemic has brought many challenges for our customers and we want to do our part to lessen any financial impact they may face as the result of the outbreak," said Badar Khan, National Gridโs Interim U.S. President. "We are committed to our customersโ well-being during this difficult time."
The policy goes into effect immediately. The company has also changed policies within offices to help prevent the spread of the virus, such as limited nonessential travel between offices, canceling all international trips and frequently cleaning facilities. Visitors have also been limited at National Grid offices.

"We have a comprehensive emergency response plan in place to keep the lights on and the gas flowing for our customers. Our pandemic team is meeting daily and weโre closely monitoring all developments associated with this evolving and complex virus."
The preparedness plan has been shared with state and local leaders.
