Park Theatre Hosts World Premiere of 'Spirituals to Swing' on Sunday

New Orleans music icon Dr. John and the Blind Boys of Alabama have partnered for a unique musical performance.

Legendary New Orleans-born Dr. John, the original ambassador of New Orleans Funk and R&B and the inspiration for the Muppet "Dr. Teeth" is coming to the Park Theatre on Sunday for a special world premiere.

He'll be joined by the Blind Boys of Alabama, a group known around the world for their gospel music.

It's the premiere of "Spirituals to Swing," an integrated show that "explores the connections between jazz, blues and gospel," according to a release.Β

The show is based on the Carnegie Hall concerts produced by John Hammond in the 1930s.

As a Five-time Grammy winner and recent inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Dr. John has been performing across the globe for more than 40 years.Β  A well-known singer/songwriter, pianist and guitarist, his theatrical stage shows are inspired by New Orleans R&B; combining blues, jazz, rock and roll, and zydeco. Throughout his illustrious career, he has worked with artists such as the Rolling Stones, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, and Van Morrison.Β

First formed in 1939, The Blind Boys of Alabama are known worldwide for their gospel music; their tours taking them to virtually every continent. The Blind Boys have earned praise for their remarkable interpretations of all types of music; from traditional gospel favorites to contemporary spiritual material by acclaimed songwriters Ben Harper, Eric Clapton, Prince, and Tom Waits among others. The Blind Boys’ live shows are high-energy musical events that appeal to audiences of all cultures.Β 

Dr. John and The Blind Boys of Alabama will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 18. Β Tickets are priced at $35, $45 and $55, and are currently on sale. Tickets may be purchased through the Theatre’s secure website www.ParkTheatreRI.com or by calling the Box Office at (401) 467-7275.Β
