Raimondo: No Coronavirus-Related Evictions In RI Until July
Gov. Gina Raimondo announced that that state will provide $5 million more to the state's rental assistance fund for those most in need.
PROVIDENCE, RI โ Rhode Island's municipal courts are slated to reopen Monday when the state enters phase two of reopening, raising concerns about a sudden increase in evictions, which were temporarily paused during the height of the coronavirus pandemic in the state. On Thursday, Gov. Gina Raimondo said eviction proceedings filed during the pandemic will not be processed until July, offering an additional month's reprieve.
The courts will face a large backlog of cases when they reopen, Raimondo said, and have agreed to hold off on processing any evictions from March 17 or later. Those from before the pandemic will not be included in the extension.
The state is working with the United Way of Rhode Island to create a mediation initiative to allow both the landlord and tenants to have their fair say, Raimondo said. More information about this program is expected in the coming weeks.

In addition, the state has added an additional $5 million to the rental assistance fund, which provides up to $5,000 to renters who are behind on payments due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"This won't be the last I have to say about rental assistance," Raimondo said. "We need a bigger, more thoughtful solution."
