Rhode Island Division Of Sheriffs Earns First-Ever Accreditation
This is the first time the department has received the distinction from the Rhode Island Police Accreditation Commission.

The Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs has earned its first-ever accreditation from the state's Police Accreditation Commission. Established in 1663 as the state's "First Protectors," there are currently 171 sworn members and four civilians. Earning the accreditation has been a main focus of Chief Sheriff David M. DeCesare in the six years since he was appointed.
"This is a momentous accomplishment for the Division of Sheriffs," DeCesare said. "We are honored to be recognized as an agency that meets and maintains best practices in our industry. This recognition is the culmination of many months of hard work and we are proud to stand among all the agencies who have achieved this distinction."
Accreditation is a voluntary process that allows a department to be recognized for maintaining a certain standard of excellence. DeCesare said it took several years of overhauling policies, procedures, rules, operations and implementing new policies to be able to be ready to seek accreditation. This is the first time the department has ever applied for the distinction.

The accreditation lasts for three years. During that time, the department will be required to submit annual reports proving that they are maintaining the required standard of excellence.
"I am extremely proud of the men and women in the Division of Sheriffs for their dedication and hard work in achieving this honor," DeCesare said. "We will strive to maintain this level of professional excellence as we move forward in service to the citizens of our state."
