Rhode Island 'Stands Ready To Welcome' Afghan Refugees: Governor
In a letter to President Joe Biden, Gov. Dan McKee said the Ocean State can provide "a welcoming refuge" to those in need.
PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island's door is open to Afghan refugees.
That was the message from Gov. Dan McKee Tuesday, in a public letter to President Joe Biden.
"Rhode Island stands ready to welcome Afghan allies and families eager to seek solace and safety in our state — a state settled by refugees," the letter read in part. "To the Afghan citizens fleeing from persecution, we can offer not only a welcoming refuge, but also an opportunity to prosper and contribute to a vibrant community."

McKee concluded that the state "is prepared to do its part to accept refugees into our community and welcomes your guidance on how we can assist."
During his weekly news conference on Tuesday, McKee said that specifics for meeting the needs of refugees such as housing will be determined once there is an idea of how many people will be coming to the state.

"We certainly won't bring on more than we can handle ... We won't promise more than we can deliver," McKee told members of the media, adding that "all 50 states should step up and do their part."
