RI Correctional Officer Facing Manslaughter Charge After Inmate Dies

CRANSTON, RI — A corrections officer at Rhode Island's Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) in Cranston is facing a manslaughter charge in connection to the death of an inmate, Attorney General Peter Neronha said Friday.

The Providence County Grand Jury returned an indictment, charging Geoffrey Peters, 43, of Smithfield, with one count of involuntary manslaughter.

State authorities said Peters was responsible for the death of inmate Timothy McQuesten on Jan. 18, 2021 "through criminal negligence," while providing "duty of care."

Further details about McQuesten's death were not made available.

Peters is scheduled to be arraigned in Providence County Superior Court on July 20.
