Rhode Island Will See 'Anomalously High' Temperatures, Gusty Storm

Rhode Island will get a taste of spring by the end of the week temperature-wise, but rain and high winds could damper the day.

RHODE ISLAND — Winter-like temperatures in Rhode Island will make a temporary disappearance by week's end, but unfortunately it doesn't look like sunny skies will accompany the change.

The region will see rain and warm temperatures on Thursday and Friday, offering a taste of spring several months early. High temperatures will reach the mid-50s by midday Friday across Rhode Island according to the National Weather Service — but it won't necessarily be a nice day to go outside.

Thursday will start off chilly with rain, although periods of non-accumulating snow and freezing rain may be seen in the morning. If you're traveling west, forecasts warn of possible ice and sleet on Thursday in western Massachusetts, Connecticut and into New York state.

"Enough snow or an icy mix can occur to make roads slippery for a time across interior parts of New England and parts of Pennsylvania and New York state later Wednesday night to Thursday morning, including along portions of the New York Thruway, I-87 and I-91," AccuWeather said in a forecast.

As temperatures rise through the day Thursday, rain will continue into Friday and last all day accompanied by gusty winds in the 35-mph range. Compared to normal, temperatures across the state Friday will be "anomalously high," according to the National Weather Service.

For the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, temperatures will head back toward the normal range in Rhode Island: temperatures in the low 40s on Saturday and high 30s on Sunday, according to the weather service.
