State Lawmakers To Consider Help For Homeless

The bill would study using Medicaid waiver funds to house the chronically homeless.

From the Rhode Island General Assembly: The Senate Committee on Health and Human Services will meet for hearings on several bills, including one proposing a study assessing the impact of allocating Medicaid waiver funds to provide housing for the chronically homeless.

The committee is scheduled to meet on Thursday, Feb. 1, at the rise of the Senate Session (around 4:30 p.m.) in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House.

  • 2018-S 2129 — This bill, sponsored by Sen. Joshua Miller (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence), requires the Executive Office of Health and Human Services to conduct a study assessing the impact of allocating Medicaid waiver funds toward housing the chronically homeless as a preventative treatment measure.
  • 2018-S 2128 — This bill, sponsored by Sen. Elizabeth Crowley (D-Dist. 16, Central Falls, Pawtucket), requires insurance coverage for at least 90 days of residential or inpatient services for mental health and/or substance-use disorders based in American Society of Addiction Medicine levels of care 3.1 and 3.3.
  • 2018 –S 2081 — This bill, sponsored by Sen. Louis DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton), requires the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals to make annual unannounced inspections and investigations of community residences.
