Teacher at RI State Prison To Receive Golden Apple Award

John Schieffelin is being recognized for his outstanding work as a teacher in a challenging setting.

Thereโ€™s no doubt that teaching a classroom full of children is a major challenge.

So is teaching a classroom full of inmates at the state prison.

Thatโ€™s what John Schieffelin does at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston, and does well.

Schieffelin has been chosen to receive a Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching and believing in โ€œthe true spirit of teaching by making classrooms a creative and safe place to learn,โ€ according to a release.

Schieffelin has worked as a teacher for the Rhode Island Department of Corrections since 1997. The highly regarded teacher is known to devote hours of personal time to help students in addition to keep himself educated on new teaching practicies and ideas.

Schieffelin was nominated by Ralph Orleck, Special Education Director/Principal and Sergio DeSousarosa, Warden of the John J. Moran Medium Security facility. In his letter of nomination, Ralph writes, โ€œJohn Schieffelin is an outstanding educator in a difficult setting. Johnโ€™s contributions to the needs of his students go beyond the classroom.โ€ Warden DeSousarosa said โ€In a very difficult environment, such as a prison, Mr. Schieffelin finds innovative ways to motivate his students and give them the inspiration to excel and achieve positive goals.โ€

โ€œSo much of what we do is behind walls and fences and the contribution our staff makes goes unnoticed. I am delighted that one of our own is receiving this recognition for the great work he does at this department.โ€ A.T. Wall, Director.

The Golden Apple Award is presented by WJAR NBC 10, the state Department of Education, Hasbro and Thames & Kosmos.
