Teen Writers Mix with Published Authors at Cranston Library Program

A new library workshop gives teenagers a chance to learn short story craft from published authors.

CRANSTON, RI -- It's not exactly The Voice for teen writers, but a published author is coming to the Cranston library, starting tomorrow, to help budding writers learn how to do their best work.

Providence native Kathryn Kulpa authored the short story collection, Pleasant Drugs, and has another work on the way. Girls on Film is described as a flash fiction chapbook to be released in 2016. She's also been published in Seventeen, Asimov's Science Fiction, Florida Review, Superstition Review, Monkeybicycle, and Smokelong Quarterly.

Kulpa is giving three workshops at the Cranston library, 140 Sockanosset Cross Road. The dates are Oct. 5, 12, and 19 at 6 p.m.

They're all free, but call Linda at 401-943-9080 at the library to register.

The workshops lead up to a chance to be published because they're connected to a short story contest, WRITE RHODE ISLAND.

The contest is open to all Ocean State youngsters in eighth- through twelfth-grade. Home-schooled, private, public and parochial schools are eligible to participate.

The deadline is Dec. 10 for students to go to the Submittable website and enter one story.

The link can be found on the School One website. School One, in Providence, and Goat Hill, a collaboration by Ann Hood, Hester Kaplan and Taylor Polites, are the sponsors.

For a list of workshops across the state visit or contact dianac@school-one.org.

Kulpa has worked as an editor for Merlyn's Pen, a magazine of writing by young people, and is currently flash fiction editor for Cleaver Magazine. She's also taught writing workshops at the University of Rhode Island, the Stonecoast Writers Conference at University of Southern Maine, Frequency Writers, Rocky Hill School, the Newport and Jamestown school systems, and at public libraries throughout Rhode Island and Southcoast Massachusetts.
