Warwick Woman Struck by Car on Park Ave. Dies

The woman, 76, initially appeared to have non life-threatening injuries but died overnight at Rhode Island Hospital. She was struck crossing the street near Crothers Street. Police said rain and darkness were a factor in the accident.

A 76-year old Warwick woman died from her injuries after she was struck by a car on Park Avenue shortly after 5 p.m., police said.

Cranston Police Major Robert W. Ryan said the woman was crossing Park Avenue at the intersection of Crothers Street and was hit by a black AcuraΒ  driven by an 80-year-old Cranston woman who said she was heading home from an appointment and never saw the pedestrian.

Witnesses said it was dark and there was a steady rain at the time, making visibility difficult, according to police. Witnesses also said traffic was heavy at the time and "the weather conditions made travel difficult and were definitely a contributing factor to the accident."

The victim reportedly emerged from between parked cars "until it was too late," Ryan said.

Police didn't identify the victim, who was reported to have head injuries and was alert at the scene with "what initially appeared to be non-life threatening injuries before being transported to Rhode Island Hospital," Ryan said.

But early this morning, police learned that she succumbed to her injuries and died sometime overnight.

The driver was identified by police as Maureen Robinson of Arthur St.

Police conducted a preliminary traffic investigation at the scene. The traffic unit was called back and is in the process of following up with a full reconstruction investigation, Ryan said.
