When Changing Clocks, Check Smoke Detectors: Red Cross

The American Red Cross reminded Rhode Islanders to check their smoke detectors when they "fall behind" this weekend.

This weekend marks the end of Daylight Savings, the day people across the country turn their clocks back one hour, or "fall behind." As you change your clocks, the American Red Cross is reminding Rhode Islanders to also test their smoke detectors.

Susan Roberts, the executive director of the organization's Rhode Island branch, said Red Cross volunteers responded to more than 200 house fires across the state over the past year.

"Home fires are our community's most frequent disaster, and we ask everyone to ‘turn and test’ this weekend to help protect your family," said Susan Roberts, Executive Director, American Red Cross in Rhode Island. "You can help stay safe by testing your smoke alarms and practicing your escape plan with everyone in your household."

As the weather gets colder and the holiday season approaches, the risk of house fires goes up, the Red Cross said, as most are caused by heating or cooking equipment.

Smoke detectors should be installed on each level of a home, the organization said, as well as inside and outside bedrooms and other sleeping areas. Alarms should be tested monthly, while batteries should be replaced at least once annually. Check carbon monoxide detectors should also be checked frequently.

When developing a home fire escape plan, include at least two ways to get out of every room, and designate a meeting spot at a safe distance from the house. Practice the escape plan until everyone can get out of the house in less than two minutes.
