Key to Awesomeness:

"I'm in charge of making sure everyone recycles at my house and putting out the trash and recycling bins on trash day. One day in at lunch in school, I noticed that all the trash was going into big trash barrels, unsorted. I started thinking about all the trash, paper and plastic piling up in a landfill and it seemed so wrong. I wanted to do something about it. I thought maybe I could be in charge of recycling at school the same way I am at home. I asked my mom and she thought it was a great idea, so I got on the Internet and did some research on the city of Cranston website for recycling. I then went to our principal, Mrs. Jennings, and our school nurse, Mrs. Habershaw, and asked if I could start a recycling program at ICCR. Of course they said yes!

In January, I recruited two of my friends at ICCR, Kenneth Lee and Kyle McCutcheon to help with project. We went to work ordering both the blue and green recycling bins for the classrooms and key areas like the cafeteria. We wrote an informational and educational letter, and sent it out to all of the ICCR School staff, faculty and students. We also put together a PowerPoint presentation with pictures, instructions and recycling guidelines and did two school-wide presentations to launch our ICCR School Recycling Program. We still have lots of work to do. Every Friday, Kenny, Kyle and I have to collect all the bins throughout the school and prepare the recyclables for pick up. . .but it's a great kind of work! It feels like we are doing something good for our school, the community, and our beautiful blue-green Earth!"
