$57,000 Truck Fine Is Largest Ever: State Police

Bay Crane Northeast, of Smithfield, didn't have the necessary permits for its 560,524-pound generator.

EAST GREENWICH, RI — The state police have fined the company that tried to move an overweight truck through Rhode Island on June 27. Bay Crane Northeast, of Smithfield, is being slapped with a $57,000 penalty. The Rhode Island State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit said the fine is for hauling cargo that exceeded the weight limits for state roadways.

According to state police, the truck was carrying a 560,524-pound generator through Rhode Island without the necessary permits to travel on state roads with a load that size. The maximum allowable load without a permit is 80,000 pounds.

Based on an investigation, the company was given the fine and a summons to appear before the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal on Aug. 31.

"This is believed to be the largest fine ever issued for a motor vehicle violation in Rhode Island," state police said.
