Avenger Boy’s LAX Team Ends Regular Season With 13-0 Division Record

Playoffs begin Thursday at 7 p.m. at home on Carcieri Field.

The EGHS boy’s lacrosse team continued with aggressive offensive play and strong defense over the last two weeks of the regular season, kicked off by a 12-1 victory over Prout. The Avengers followed with a decisive 8-0 win over South Kingstown, followed by a 17-4 victory over Middletown played over two days due to rain and storm delays. The team wrapped up its regular season last Tuesday with a 13-0 shutout against Narragansett at home.

At this point, the Avengers lead Division II at 13-0, followed closely by rival South Kingstown with an 11-2 record. According to the RIIL website, EGHS leads the entire league in wins and has averaged nearly 12 goals per game. The Avenger defense has also been strong, allowing an average of only 2 goals per game – the best performance of any team in the state.

Avenger players Colin Waitkun and Colin Bernier are two of the state’s top scorers per current stats reported by the Providence Journal. Both are tied for fifth place in total points from goals and assists, while Bernier is in fifth place and Waitkun in seventh place for goals scored. In addition, EG’s Matt Cruise, Ryan Trinque, and Sam Feinberg are all in the top 30 scoring players in the state for the regular season.

According to Coach Brian Trapani, the team has been fortunate to have extensive depth this year, providing the ability to leverage more of its players.  Given the graduation of 15 senior players this year, these individuals “will be the team going forward.” As the team prepares for playoffs, it will work on “conditioning, passing, catching, shooting, and offensive schemes,” he said. Unsure of their opponent in the quarter-finals, the team anticipates continuing to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their opponent as part of their winning strategy.

Fans are encouraged to come out and cheer on the Avengers this Thursday, May 23, at 7 p.m. on EGHS’s Carcieri Field.
