Avenger Boy’s Lacrosse Team Leads Division II at Mid-Season
EG continues strong performance with 5-0 division record, 5-2 overall
The Avengers kicked off last week in a home game against the Division I North Kingstown Skippers. Consistent with their history of slow starts, EG had only three goals in the first half of the game, one from Colin Waitkun, followed by two from Captain Sam Feinberg. North Kingstown countered with six goals, two each from John Bishara and Steven Fallon, one each by Colin Vincent and Captain Aaron Binek. The third quarter saw three goals by the Avengers (Colin Bernier, Captain Matt Cruise, Ryan Trinque) and three from the Skippers (Fallon, Captain Kevin McDermott, Vincent).
The Avenger’s offense came to life in the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals by Ben Contreras, Feinberg, and Trinque leaving the score 9-9 as the clock ran out. The teams both showed aggressive play through double overtime, when the game ended with an NK score by Binek giving the Skippers a 10-9 victory.

"We had some nice shots and good opportunities” in the fourth quarter, said Captain Conner Finn, “but we could have done better both on offense and defense” throughout the game. In moving forward, he said the team would work on their game plan and playing “good lacrosse overall.”
The Avengers then traveled to play the Cumberland Clippers, a Division II North team. Once again, EG found themselves tied at the half, with goals by Cruise and Contreras countered by Clipper goals from John Buckley and Leandro Castillo. The Clippers came back just over a minute into the third quarter with a goal by Robert Campbell, but EG’s defense kept Cumberland at bay through the finish.

The same can’t be said of the Avenger offense, which was highly productive in the second half. Colin Bernier made four goals, with one point each scored by Trinque, Contreras, and Feinberg. The Avengers walked away with a decisive 9-3 win. After the game, Captain Matt Cruise agreed that the team is known as a second-half team.
“We have a lot of heart and dedication and I’m not surprised with our big push at the end,” said Cruise. He noted the team’s dedicated practice day in and day out “really paid off in the second half today.”
Come to Carcieri Field this Tuesday, April 23, at 3:30 p.m. to cheer on the Avengers when they host Wheeler School. EG then travels to PCD on Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. game, followed by a home game on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Mount Saint Charles.
