Avengers Boys Advance to DII Lacrosse Semifinals
EG to play Wheeler on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Carcieri Field; Girls fall to Bay View in the quarterfinals.
EG lacrosse fans kicked off last Thursday’s playoffs cheering on the Lady Avengers in their Division I quarterfinal bid against Bay View Academy. Avenger Carolyn Cruise made a successful shot on goal to bring the game to a tie with just over a minute left in the game. A tough call against EG and another goal by Bay View were just enough to give Bay View a 12-11 win over the Avengers.
The EGHS boy’s team then took the field under cloudy skies for their Division II quarterfinal game against the Prout Crusaders. Although EG had two wins against Prout during the regular season, the Avengers experienced their typical slow start. Fans had to wait nearly six minutes into the first quarter for EG to score, with offensive pressure building throughout the rest of the first half. The Avengers left the field at the half with a 5-1 lead with two goals by Alex White and one each by Jack Payette, Colin Bernier, and Colin Waitkun countered by only one Prout goal from Nyle Sockbeson.
The Avenger defense continued to hold back the Crusaders throughout the third quarter, allowing EG to score three more goals by Bernier (2) and White (1). EG’s offense continued to be productive through the fourth quarter with two goals by Waitkun and one each from Bernier and Payette. EG’s defense held Prout to just one goal by Charles Baetjer in the fourth quarter, leaving the Crusaders with a 12-2 loss to the Avengers.

After the game, Captain Matt Cruise remarked on the team “being a second-half team, but if that means winning we’ll take it." He continued, “Defense has been solid all year.” Coach Brian Trapani agreed: “Defense worked really hard." Trapani said although the Avengers made some mistakes early in the game, the offense demonstrated patience and discipline “doing a fantastic job against Prout’s tough zone defense.”
Cheer on the Avengers when they face the Wheeler Warriors in the Division II semifinal playoffs this Wednesday, May 29, at 6 p.m. at EGHS’s Carcieri Field. The winner of this game will face either South Kingstown or Middletown in the DII finals at Brown University on Sunday, June 2, at 3 p.m.
