'A Beloved Member' of the West Warwick High School Community Was Killed in Sunday's Train Mishap

The person killed by the Amtrak train on Sunday was a student at West Warwick High.

EAST GREENWICH, RI — The teen struck and killed on train tracks Sunday was a 16-year-old student at West Warwick High.

"It's tragic," West Warwick Schools Superintendent Karen Tarasevich said today. She confirmed the students are aware of their classmate's death.

"We made an announcement this morning" and held a moment of silence, she said.

Amtrak police said the accident happened around 2:32 p.m. on Sunday when a passenger train, from Boston en route to Washington, D.C., struck a person on the tracks.

Her identity is not being released pending notification to all family members.

East Greenwich police today declined to comment and referred questions to Amtrak.

Mike Tolbert, of Amtrak media relations, said he could confirm the victim was a 16-year-old girl but said there is no additional information available.

The student was "a beloved member of our school community," Tarasevich said, "and she'll be greatly missed."

The school social workers and guidance counselors, along with police and the Kent Center, are helping the youngsters deal with losing their friend.

Tarasevich also said the teachers and staff are keeping the family in their thoughts.
