Clown Town Thrives In New Venue

Moving to St. Luke's did not appear to dampen the draw as hundreds enjoyed themselves while helping more than one good cause.

If it's a pleasant Saturday in April, it must be time for Clown Town. The event, put on by the Greenwich Bay Woman's Club for the benefit of Crossroads Rhode Island, Multiple Sclerosis Dream Center of Rhode Island, and the Barbra Tufts Cooperative Preschool, took place on the nicest day of the month, so far.

At 41 years of age, Clown Town can be considered a cornerstone of East Greenwich culture.

"We're so grateful for our volunteers without whom we could not maintain this local institution," said Kathy Gray (also known as Chiclet - her clown name). "We have boyfriends and husbands helping out along with the members of the GBWC."

The event also provided an opportunity for some local teens to contribute to the event. GBWC member Jennifer Lucente, whose son, David, is attending a confirmation class at Our Lady of Mercy, worked with the class's teacher to arrange for the students to help out Clown Town in order to get the Community Service hours required by the class.

Along with those enjoying this facet of their first childhood, there were a number of parents in the crowd coming back with the Second Generation in tow to enjoy the games, food, and festivities.  Kristian Photopoulos, who grew up in East Greenwich and was a Clown Town attendee as a kid, brought his family up from their home in Saunderstown to enjoy themselves. Tom and Janet Joyce had fun doting over their granddaughter Emerson McEvoy as she tried her hand at the various tests of skill.

Overall, it was a very successful day and everyone came away looking forward to year 42.
