East Greenwich Man Loses $2K To Scammers Spinning Tale Of $3,800 Russian Child Porn: Cops
The East Greenwich man put the $2,000 into a bitcoin machine, police said.
EAST GREENWICH, RI β An East Greenwich man lost $2,000 to scammers spinning a tale of a $3,800 Russian child pornography purchase, police said.
The 60-year-old East Greenwich man went to the police Feb. 28 and told them he received a text from an unknown number instructing him to call Apple's fraud department, according to a police report.

The man called the provided number and spoke to someone who informed him "his Apple ID is being used 'in a lot of places for bad things'" and that he "needs to contact a lot of people to figure it out,'" the report said.

The man was also told that $3,800 was "used to purchase child porn in Russia, according to the report.
The man told police "he 'contacted Citizen's Fraud Department' to figure out what was going on," the report said, and was told a $3,800 "payment was authorized and they could not stop it."

"The 'Citizen's Fraud Department' advised he could either freeze his account for two weeks or deposit ($3,800) into a bitcoin machine in ($100) dollar bills."

The man withdrew $3,800 and headed to a gas station in Warwick to put the money in a bitcoin machine, according to the report, but was only "allowed" to deposit $2,000.
The matter was to be forwarded t o the detective's division for further review.
