East Greenwich Yacht Club's Blessing of the Fleet is June 27

A parade of boats will make their way through Greenwich Cove to be blessed in an annual tradition.

The annual blessing of the fleet in the waters off East Greenwich Yacht Club is Saturday, June 27.

Boats will be dressed up and led into the cove and up the channel where clergy positioned on “B” dock aboard Spray will bless each boat as they pass.

All the boats will rendezvous off West Corner of Goddard Park at 10:30 a.m. and should be making their way to the club by 11 a.m.

Organizers are recommending all boat owners dress their ship in either traditional nautical tradition or “Mardi Gras” style.

If you’re piloting a vessel, look for Tom Stocker’s sailboat, Mojo, off Goddard Park and check in with him on Channel 68, with the name of your boat and skipper. The names will be announced over the channel as you pass by the club for the blessing.

The dignitaries and officers of East Greenwich Yacht Club will lead the parade into the cove and through the channel. Once past the dock and blessed, boats will be on their way to their chosen destinations.

All yacht club members, their friends and boaters are welcome to attend.

The event is also an opportunity for potentially new members to check out the club and meet some of its members before joining.

It’s also a chance to see some of the vessels that are docked in Rhode Island waters.

Spectators along the waterfront can get a front-row seat, so the day might the perfect opportunity to have brunch bat one of the town’s many waterfront restaurants.

The club’s first blessing of the fleet was in 2011. At the time, club member Bill Waterson said that he couldn’t say for sure if the club has ever had a blessing of the fleet before then.

““I can’t say for sure that this has never happened before, because I haven’t lived for 100 years yet!” he said.
